English Labradors are also known as Bench Labs or Show Labs and are considered true to the AKC standard. English Labs are the original type of Lab. When comparing the two types physically, the English Lab has a more blocky, square head, a shorter muzzle, larger eyes, shorter stature, bigger bones, a thicker "otter tail," a flatter back, and a wider chest than its American counterpart. American Labs tend to be taller, have longer noses, and narrower heads.
The most noticeable difference between English and American Labs is their temperament. The English Labs are MUCH calmer than American Labs which have very excitable personalities and are also known as field dogs. If you're an avid hunter and need a very active dog that will go all day, your best choice would be an American Lab. If you have children or are looking for a dog who will be a big teddy bear, you want an English Lab. They still love the outdoors, swimming, and retrieving, but when the day is done they like to relax by the fire and sleep instead of constantly wanting to go, go, go.
